Key takeaway: Most Georgia programs combine 2–3 nights in Tbilisi, a wine day or overnight in Kakheti and 1–2 nights in Kazbegi. A Georgia DMC adds value by managing mountain roads and seasonal closures, booking wineries and guides, and linking Georgia with Azerbaijan on one contract.

Why Georgia works for travel trade programs

Georgia packs a lot into a small country: a lively capital, one of the world's oldest wine traditions, Orthodox monasteries and the high Caucasus within three hours of Tbilisi. Citizens of many countries can enter visa-free, which makes it easy to sell as a standalone trip or as an add-on to Azerbaijan or Turkey.

Regions and how long to stay

  • Tbilisi — 2–3 nights: Old Town, sulphur baths, Narikala Fortress and the food and wine scene.
  • Mtskheta — half a day: the UNESCO-listed Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery, usually on the way north.
  • Kakheti and Sighnaghi — a full day or 1–2 nights: qvevri wineries, estates and Alazani Valley views.
  • Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) — 1–2 nights: Gergeti Trinity Church, the Dariali Gorge and mountain walks.
  • Svaneti and Kutaisi — 2–3 nights for active groups: Mestia, Ushguli and the medieval Svan towers.

Logistics: airports, roads and seasons

International flights arrive at Tbilisi (TBS), Kutaisi (KUT) and Batumi (BUS); open-jaw routings — in via Tbilisi, out via Kutaisi — save long drives on western itineraries. The Georgian Military Road to Kazbegi crosses a high pass that can close temporarily after heavy snow in winter, so a DMC should plan alternatives and use 4x4 vehicles where needed.

May–June and September–October are the best months for most programs. Late September and October is the rtveli grape harvest in Kakheti, and Gudauri offers skiing from December to April.

Wine programs in Kakheti

Georgian qvevri winemaking — fermenting wine in clay vessels buried underground — is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Good wine programs mix a larger estate with small family cellars, include a traditional supra feast led by a tamada (toastmaster), and leave time for Sighnaghi and Bodbe Monastery.

Checklist: what to ask a Georgia DMC

  1. Mountain contingency

What is the plan if the road to Kazbegi closes or weather blocks a hike?

  2. Vehicles

Are 4x4s or minibuses available for mountain sections, and are drivers experienced on those roads?

  3. Wineries

Which family wineries and estates does the DMC work with, and can tastings be private for your group?

  4. Guides

Are licensed guides available in your clients' language for every day of the program?

  5. Cross-border

Can the DMC operate the Azerbaijan or Armenia leg as well, under one contract?

Combining Georgia with Azerbaijan

Georgia and Azerbaijan pair naturally along the old Silk Road. A typical 9–12 day route enters in Baku, continues through Shamakhi and Sheki to the Georgian border, then covers Kakheti, Tbilisi and Kazbegi. Covaze operates both countries with one team, so partners have one contract and one point of contact.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for a Georgia tour?

Five to six days covers Tbilisi, Kakheti and Kazbegi at a comfortable pace. Add two to three days for Svaneti or for a combined route with Azerbaijan.

Is the road to Kazbegi open all year?

It is generally open, but the high pass on the Georgian Military Road can close temporarily after heavy snow. A DMC monitors conditions and adjusts the program when needed.

What is qvevri wine?

Qvevri wine is made in large clay vessels buried underground — a Georgian method recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

Can Covaze run a Georgia and Azerbaijan combined tour?

Yes. We operate combined Azerbaijan–Georgia itineraries overland or with a short Baku–Tbilisi flight, under one contract.
